Parisian brand Surface to Air has always had a thing for bomber jackets, with each season bringing a new version or two that experiment with fabrics, print and design. The love affair continues for SS15, where the standout piece is the Eileen Bomber. In a material referred to as “Pop Up Stripes”, the jacket is cut into that familiar sporty shape and rendered in a sheer nylon fabric stitched up with stripes of navy blue ribbon. The design ends up looking more track jacket than military surplus and perfectly represents the label’s spring collection which is heavy on athletics.
Also relevant this season is the drawstring, which adds a casual, phys ed touch onto silk jogging shorts, the v-neck Ricky Dress, and the Gina jumpsuit. A black and white stripe crewneck sweater echoes the workwear of the pro sports referee and the Ruth Top is undeniably inspired by baseball jerseys. While the collection is not completely devoid of prints, color-blocking makes the biggest impact, presented in neutral palette of black, white, grey, and navy blue. The sole bright color in the collection is a very specific shade of yellow, as seen on “sports” versions of Walkmans and boomboxes of the 1980s and 90s.
