A master at crafting everyday clothes that hints at fantasy, French designer Vanessa Bruno always knows what a girl wants and this season, it’s especially true. In her winning pre-fall collection, she balances boyish cuts with feminine flourishes and small but mighty details that looked impeccably undone.
Take for instance the navy blue double face wool coat. With just a bit of red piping showing, it features slightly frayed raw edges that evoke a pulled-from-grandma’s-attic quality. A tomato red turtleneck sweater is lovingly distressed, with small tears on the collar and hem. In addition to these perfectly imperfect pieces are a pristine cream tweed duffle coat, scalloped embroidered lace decoration (on a skirt and mini dress), floral laser-cut sweaters, and a black and white print called ‘Beirut’ that looks a whole lot like barbed wire. However, when it’s emblazoned across a silk crepe dress, is more starry than scary.
