70s glam never goes out of style, especially if T.Rex’s Marc Bolan is your muse. Read on to learn how to interpret his look today.
Marc Bolan, “Jeepster”
“Jeepster” was the second single off of T.Rex’s 1971 breakthough album, Electric Warrior. A rockabilly-esque ode to a foxy lady, “Jeepster” was not a favorite of singer Marc Bolan, but it still managed to send his female teeny bop fanbase into a panic-y state of “T-Rextacy”, mostly due to the famous last line: “I’m gonna suck ya!”. In this clip, Bolan and his band of merry glam men perform the number at a 1972 concert at the Wembley Empire Pool.
About the Look
Marc Bolan may have begun his musical career as a folksy flower-child type, but by the early 1970’s, he swapped his love beads for vats of glitter. A typical ensemble for the frizzy-headed rock prince, as seen here, usually included a shmancy, tiny fit blazer with large lapels (often from his favorite label, Alkasura), brightly hued flared trousers and a tight graphic t-shirt, often with a cartoon print (a huge trend in the early 70’s). A black top hat was often part of the picture and became a signature. Unlike many of his glam rock peers — and in spite of his diminutive size — he never resorted to preposterously large platform shoes, which has made his personal style age much better than, say, Slade or Sweet (of course, we’re ignoring some of those satin get-ups of Bolan’s later years). We reckon if he was around today, he’d be a fan of Balmain and Zadig & Voltaire. He could, after all, fit into women’s wear.
