The gilded fashions worn by Sheila E. in the 80s are not for wallflower types.
Sheila E. — from the film Krush Groove
Krush Groove (1985) is a stand-out amongst 80s hip-hop movies. More upbeat than Beat Street and more authentic than Breakin’, Krush is loosely based on the story behind Def Jam Records. With an impressive cast of iconic rap and R&B talent that includes Run D.M.C., the Beastie Boys, Kurtis Blow, LL Cool J, Rick Rubin, and New Edition, the performances alone make Krush worth watching on repeat. The film also stars Blair Underwood as future music and media mogul Russel, and while he is indeed one smokin’ hot fox, it’s his lady love, Sheila E. — with her killer dance moves and all-around gorgeousness — that really captivates.
About the Look
Here, Sheila performs ‘A Love Bizarre’ wearing a look which mirrors that of collaborator (and romantic partner) Prince, whom she met in the late 70s. Throughout their legendary friendship, Prince helped develop her solo career, producing and writing music and booking her to open 1984/85 ‘Purple Rain Tour’. It’s likely he helped shape her look too — the modern-day aristocrat, Baroquian flourishes, tall boots, and very tight pants are all very Prince (he idolized Mozart and one of his favorite movies was Amadeus). But Sheila differentiates herself through accessories — piles of pearls and dangly gold baubles with a Middle Eastern feel.
