Without question, my all-time favorite look from the entire ‘Star Wars’ franchise is Princess Leia’s white hot Hoth jumpsuit from ‘The Empire Strikes Back’. So I was pretty stoked to find out that Marcus Wainwright used those ice planet threads as inspiration for Rag & Bone’s upcoming Star Wars range.
Officially releasing on December 1 (two weeks before ‘The Last Jedi’s opening weekend), the capsule collection was a dream come true for Wainwright, a Star Wars fanatic who, like most 80s kids, fell in love with the franchise in grade school. For his research, Marcus was given unprecedented access to the Lucasfilm archives and he met with the costume designers of Rogue One during filming. Some of the film references in the collection, like the X-Wing Fighter t-shirt, are obvious. Others, though, are more understated, like the lace-up Echo jacket and pants, named after Hoth’s Echo Base, and the men’s hooded tunic, which nods to Luke Skywalker’s cloak from ‘Return of the Jedi’. The Hope Sweater is just gorgeous, with its funnel neck and rolled edges, and Rag’s Ellis Boot gets a killer upgrade befitting the Rebel Alliance. Wainwright said his main challenge was to keep the range from looking ‘too costumey’ (which wouldn’t even be a bad thing since so many of the original costumes are wearable in 2017). But with their utilitarian designs and functional detailing, the clothes are surely influenced by The Force, but they remain quintessentially Rag & Bone.
