The fall collection from Joseph Altuzarra has roots in the 2013 Jim Jarmusch film, Only Lovers Left Alive. Starring Tilda Swinton and Tom Hiddleston as a pair of star-crossed vampires, the flick also features a high style, century-spanning wardrobe by Bina Daigelern. But according to Altuzarra, the cinematic influence isn’t supposed to be obvious: ‘I wanted to be free to follow my curiosity about the world we live in, and weave a tapestry of references and stories into this collection.’ So while you won’t see any of Daigelern’s leather jackets or antique robes, there is a similar mood in the way Altuzarra’s disparate reference points mix and mingle.
There are the tactile touches with Moroccan flavor, like yarn tassel trim on a merino wool sweater or the folkloric vibe of a vibrant piece-work fringe dress. Handkerchief hem midi dresses and skirts float in Indian-inspired paisleys. Tie-front pencil skirts and pants feature drawstring waists and velvet striping lifted from athletic wear. And then there is the evening wear, those jaw-dropping silk gowns encrusted with sequins that channel the Altuzarra’s carefree vision and leave us uncharacteristically speechless (as well they should at $15,000).
