Sandro’s fall collection is dark, cool and a little bit moody, and shows how the brand is at the top of its game.
Since its 1984 inception, Sandro has had a knack for capturing the look that French girls want to wear now, whenever that now may be. Credit creative director Evelyne Chétrite and her impeccable fashion intuition which has helped shaped the Sandro look for three decades. But it’s only been the past few years that Sandro has really started to become recognized as a global fashion powerhouse. Blame it on the industry’s current love affair with the Parisian girl look — the somewhat undefinable, unfussy, undone style that fashion editors repeatedly refer to as ‘effortless’ and ‘chic’. This obsession is what’s powering a renewed interest in Parisian contemporary fashion, a so-called “wave” that also includes Maje, APC, the Kooples, b&sh, IRO, and Zadig & Voltaire.
If Sandro is any indication of current French taste, then the Paris girls want to look British, or more specifically, early-80s London scenester. Playing on the theme ‘Wonder’, the fall-winter ’14 collection draws heavily from that fruitful period of British music culture, with shades of mod revival, Buffalo and new wave. The bomber jacket is reborn with an extra wide waistband and puffy sleeves. There are high-waisted suspender skirts, straight-legged pinstripe trousers and tailored wool coats with hidden buttons. Shoes and boots feature chunky soles and silver rivets. An undoubtably boyish element is at play, a mood that the formerly bohemian label has been experimenting with for several seasons.
