Matchesfashion.com, the designer emporium that inspires lofty fashion daydreams, has ventured into the world of private label fashion this season with Raey. Billed as the ‘definitive collection of wardrobe staples’, Raey takes a minimalist approach to design, offering up immaculate contemporary basics rendered in luxury fabrics. Both men’s and women’s divisions are led by creative director Rachael Proud (formerly of Christopher Kane and Topman) who wanted to create clothes that reflected the increasingly casual workplace but were also stylish and versatile.
Both lines stick with the same mostly neutral color palette — navy, white, grey, yellow — and many of the pieces could easily pass for unisex. Standouts include the women’s blanket coats — in pink and yellow — which have a bit of volume in them and feature slouchy drop-shoulders and nary a visible front closure (worn with their coordinating crepe dresses and the look harkens back to 1960s jacket/dress sets). For men, it’s the black pinstriped cotton trousers and shorts that we’d love to see walking down the street ahead of us. There are jumpsuits for both women and men (we said unisex, didn’t we?) as well as some swell matching tie-dyed sweatshirts that have inspired us to head to AC Moore for some navy blue RIT dye and a bag of rubber bands.
