vintage editorial ~ a summer of love
February 23, 2012 in photo play

As I’ve mentioned before, there was a massive comeback in hippie styles during the nineties and this surprisingly sexy eight-page spread from the May 1993 issue of Seventeen illustrates the revivial in all of its elephant belled, Lennon-bespeckled, floppy-hatted glory.
Many of the 1960′s/70′s-inspired fashions currently being celebrated by style bloggers are actually more reminiscent of the revival than of the flower power originals but who cares when it all looks this rich? The colors of this “Summer of Love” story are extraordinary and it just tickles me that it was shot by one of rock n’ roll’s preeminent photographers, Matthew Rolston (Matthew is responsible for some of the most famous shots in pop music history, including that 1983 photo of Michael Jackson in the yellow sweater vest and bow tie). The theatrical styling creates images that are more inspirational than truly wearable but isn’t that what editorials are supposed to be?

Adoring the Seventeen magazine posts. Fantastic work!
