vintage ad ~ yardley slicker dollys
Yardley of London is best known for its luxury bath & beauty products that may smell lovely but have all the visual appeal of your average set of hotel toiletries. However, back in the 60′s and 70′s, the company also produced cosmetics and designed some of the most irresistable packaging this side of the Atlantic (or that side, depending on where you live). Yardley’s associations with top models like Twiggy and Jean Shrimpton made the brand a prized commodity amongst the most hip-n-happenin’ teens on the scene. Today, vintage Yardley items from the mod period are highly collectible and can fetch hundreds of dollars on eBay (we just recommend you don’t use the make-up!).
In the November 1967 issue of Seventeen, we found this ad for “Slicker Dollys”, a set of nine mix-and-match lip sticks and glosses which declares itself to be “The kit of a hundred looks”. The wearablility of all one-hundred looks is up for debate, but the packaging is definitely worth a million “ohmygoshsocuteIcantstandit”s. Each mini stick sits in a little window framed by a tiny illustrated fashion gal and one is more cheerful than the next.
